ABOUT
Soré Agbaje is a Nigerian-American spoken word poet and activist who gives language to marginalized experiences. The internationally acclaimed poet views poetry as a means of narrative justice. Soré has brought her message of social change to world leaders such as Justin Trudeau, Graça Machel, former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the UN Secretary-General and more.
As a Teaching Artist, Soré wields poetry to approach discussions around social issues, from facilitating a workshop on climate change with the Sierra Club to a seminar on gender violence for the Commission on the Status of Women to a workshop at the Brooklyn Museum on reclaiming identity and culture. With the belief that poetry enables us to reclaim space and voice, Soré has facilitated workshops for diverse and intergenerational audiences, from Kate Spade New York and BBC employees to BuildOn youth and high school students transitioning into college.
The 2014-2015 NYC Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador has received awards and fellowships from Scholastic, NYCLU, Cambridge Writers' Workshop, Urban Word NYC and NYC Votes. You can find Soré published in Rookie Mag, For Harriet, and Let's Panic Mag Issue 4, among others, and in anthologies including Lincoln Center Education's Poet-Linc.
With poetry as her passport to new places and people, Soré has toured Germany and Austria, sponsored by the Munich Council of the Arts and performed in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the Women Deliver Conference. She has been featured on ABC's Good Morning America, Button Poetry and Adidas' "Don't Be Quiet Please" campaign in conjunction with Pharell Williams and the US Open.
Soré bridges the page with stage as a playwright, performing a self-written one-woman show, Bringing Back My Girl, off-broadway at New York Live Arts. Her latest play, "Countdown," was put up by the Wild Project through the theater program, "Conscious Language."
Soré combines her love of language with her passion for social justice. She currently works at the intersection of social impact and entertainment, employing narrative, campaign and programmatic strategies that mobilize to help individuals and organizations leverage their platforms for good.
